Know Your Cow: Empowering Consumers To Take Control of Their Meat Supply

Breeauna Sagdal

Breeauna Sagdal of The Beef Initiative highlights how centralized control over the U.S. meat supply threatens food sovereignty and transparency regarding the provenance of the meat we buy. She introduces the “Know Your Cow” (KYC) model, encouraging consumers to participate in herd share programs, where they can own a share of livestock and legally access locally raised and processed meat.

This approach provides full transparency, supports small family farms, and offers a cost-effective alternative to mystery meat in grocery stores. Sagdal also advocates for Congressman Massie’s proposed Prime Act, which seeks to legalize the purchase of meat directly from local ranchers, something that is forbidden by USDA.
